Heartbreaking Update For Como Park Zoo & Conservatory Fans About Beloved Animal

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, located at 1225 Estabrook Dr in St. Paul, sent a note out to fans in December with an update about Mumford, their beloved male African lion.  It was noticed by quite a few visitors that Mumford was experiencing some nosebleeds.

Many of you have noticed or asked about Mumford’s recent nosebleeds, and we want to share an update from the heart about our brave and beloved male lion.
Earlier this year, Mumford was diagnosed with an untreatable tumor within his nasal sinuses. While the condition is serious, there’s no clear timeline and he’s still having good days and spending time with Maji. After thoughtful discussions with our veterinary team and consulting specialists, we’ve made the compassionate decision to focus on his comfort and quality of life rather than treatments that could cause more harm than good.

At that time, it was mentioned to fans of the zoo that Mumford was still having good days, but his quality of life and comfort were the priority.  Hospice care was the plan as he enjoyed the remainder of his life alongside Maji, his companion lioness.

Unfortunately, Mumford's condition continued to decline and the team at Como Park Zoo & Conservatory had a tough decision to make last week.

Beloved Male African Lion, Mumford, At Como Park Zoo & Conservatory Has Passed Away

Since 2019, guests at Como Park Zoo & Conservatory have had the amazing pleasure to see Mumford in person.  This male African lion was born at Pueblo Zoo in Colorado and made Como its home in 2019.

Seeing Mumfords majestic mane and hearing his impressive roar have been admirable traits that guests of Como will not forget.  Now, those memories throughout the years are being collected to help celebrate the life of Mumford.

After noticing that Mumfords condition was declining, the animal care team made an extremely tough decision, which they shared with the public last week.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Mumford, our beloved male African lion, who was peacefully euthanized in the care of his animal care team on Friday, April 24. He was 10 years old. Many of you may remember that we shared in December that Mumford had been diagnosed with an untreatable tumor within his nasal sinuses and was receiving hospice care. Since then, his care team focused on keeping him comfortable and ensuring the best possible quality of life. When his condition declined, the compassionate decision was made to say goodbye peacefully. Guests loved seeing Mumford napping in the sun, watching visitors, enjoying enrichment, and spending time with Maji. Maji remains at Como and is being closely monitored by her care team during this transition. Mumford was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. We invite you to share your memories and photos as we celebrate this magnificent lion. Please keep his care team in their thoughts during this difficult time. - Como Park Zoo & Conservatory Facebook Page
