A deputy from the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office discovered the suffering dog in July after being alerted to a possible animal mistreatment situation. The criminal complaint was filed in Olmsted County Court on Tuesday.
The court document says the deputy responded to an animal mistreatment report at the rural Pine Island home of 82-year-old Hadley Edwin Thompson.

Upon arrival the deputy found the dog lying in a dirt floor kennel with matted fur and feces throughout the kennel. The dog also had fecal matter stuck on its backside and was covered with maggots on its rear, the complaint says.
There was also the odor of rotting flesh. An examination of the dog found it was in such poor condition that it had to be euthanized, according to the court document.
The examination determined the dog was about eight years old and had been infested by the maggots for more than five days, the complaint says.
Thompson is facing a charge of overwork/mistreat animal-torture. He’s scheduled to make his first court appearance next month.
