Charges – Red Wing Man Murdered His Wife Before Police Standoff
Red Wing, MN (KROC-AM News) - Conditional bail was set at $1 million today when a Red Wing man was formally arraigned on a second-degree murder charge in Goodhue County Court.
41-year-old Darryl Dion Nixon Jr. was arrested at his Red Wing residence Sunday evening following a standoff that began when Red Wing police responded to a report of a suicidal man with a gun. According to the criminal complaint, the initial call was from a female who was crying and asking for help. A second call was then received from Nixon's mother, who told the dispatcher that she believed her son may have killed his wife.
The court document says one of the first officers to arrive at the scene pounded on the door and spoke with Nixon, who told the officer "shoot me" multiple times. The officer then observed that Nixon was holding a small semi automatic pistol and alerted the other officers nearby that Nixon had a gun.
The complaint indicates that Nixon continued to tell officers to shoot him and then he made comments about someone being dead. The officer who first knocked on the door reported hearing Nixon state, "killed her."
During the following negotiations preceding Nixon's surrender, the officers reported that he yelled for police to shoot him and was observed holding the gun to his head. He was also seen firing a shot into the air while standing at the door to his residence. The court record indicates a member of the Emergency Response Team that had been summoned to the scene responded by firing a "less lethal" round, which caused Nixon to fall back into the residence.
After about three hours of negotiations, Nixon exited the residence and was taken into custody. The criminal complaint says Red Wing police then entered the residence and found a woman deceased on the couch in the living room. The Red Wing Police Department today identified the victim as 40-year-old Andrea Elizabeth Broyld of Red Wing.
The charges indicate that agents from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and a Medical Examiner's investigator visually observed what appeared to be 10 entry wounds from suspected gunshots on the woman's upper and lower back area. Approximately twelve 9 mm shell casings were found near the victim's body and another spent shell casing was located on the front steps of the home.
The charging document states that family members told police that Nixon has suffered from severe mental health issues and that "he hears and sees things that aren't really there." His mother also told investigators that Nixon was in possession of numerous firearms.
Nixon's next court appearance is scheduled next week.
