Maplewood, MN (MinnesotaNow)- A 25-year-old man is in custody after allegedly shooting at a sheriff’s deputy in the Twin Cities Tuesday evening.

That’s according to the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office. Law enforcement later recovered the gun and took the shooting suspect into custody.

St. Paul Man Arrested After Shooting at Ramsey County Sheriff's Deputy from Close Range

The ordeal began at 8 p.m. in the area of Rice St. and Roselawn Ave. in Maplewood. Authorities say the suspect fired at a deputy from point blank range. 

The round hit the hood of the deputy’s squad vehicle then ricocheted into the squad’s windshield, according to a post on the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office’s X account.

No injuries were reported. 

The suspect fled from the scene and entered a different vehicle. He discarded the gun while fleeing, authorities say. A K-9 and deputy later recovered the firearm in the 1900 block of Rice St. 

Arrest Made in Minneapolis

Members of the State Patrol, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, St. Paul Police Department and Maplewood Police Department took the suspect into custody in Minneapolis. 

The State Patrol’s helicopter was also used in the apprehension. 

Authorities identified the shooting suspect as 25-year-old Dmonte Shavezz Leanna of St. Paul

He was booked into the Ramsey County Jail shortly after 11:15 Tuesday night. His first court appearance has not been scheduled.

It’s the second time in less than a week that law enforcement was shot at in the Twin Cities.

On Saturday morning, 37-year-old Adrian Flowers allegedly fired a gunshot at the head of an Eagan police officer who had responded to a report of a domestic dispute Saturday morning.

He has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer and other felonies.
