Elderly Homeowner Killed in Rural Minnesota House Fire
Ely, MN (KROC-AM News)- A rural Minnesota house fire claimed the life of the home’s elderly owner.
First responders rushed to the scene of the deadly fire shortly after 1:15 p.m. on Sunday. The emergency personnel who first arrived at the home reported thick smoke coming from the inside of the structure.
A news release issued Monday morning by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says the fire broke out at a rural residence about 3 miles outside of Ely.
Dispatch had information that indicated the home’s sole elderly owner was still inside of the burning house. Firefighters entered the home but could not find the resident while battling the thick smoke, the news release says.
Fire crews then got the flames under control and conducted a second search of the home and that led to discovery of the homeowner. The resident was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities plan to release the victim’s name at a later time. The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office, Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office and St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the deadly blaze.
