La Crosse, WI (KROC-AM News) - The La Crosse Fire Department is investigating a fatal fire.

A news release says La Crosse firefighters responded around 4:40 AM to a report concerning the smell of smoke in a residential neighborhood about five blocks east of the Highway 14 bridge over the Mississippi River. When they arrived, the firefighters spotted light smoke coming from a first-floor unit in an apartment house at 725 Cameron Avenue.

The firefighters reported that they were met with moderate heat and smoke and were able to quickly extinguish the fire before finding the occupant of the residence dead inside the apartment. The victim's name has not been released.

The Fire Department report indicates none of the other renters were displaced by the fire and the flames were confined to the apartment where the victim was found. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
