Freeborn County is among the eight southern Minnesota counties included in a federal disaster declaration issued by President Barack Obama on Monday.

The other counties covered by the declaration are mainly in southwestern Minnesota. The declaration will extend federal assistance to help communities cover expenses incurred in the response to the flooding that hit much of the state last month and to help pay for repairs to public infrastructure damaged by the flooding.

Governor Mark Dayton says he anticipates additional counties will be added to the declaration as additional damage assessments are submitted to the federal government. The most recent damage assessment figures from the Federal Emergency Management Agency show just over $37 million in damage and eligible expenses.
