Rochester police then conducted a subsequent traffic stop at the request of narcotics detectives.

The charges say narcotics detectives saw 57-year-old Demetrious Deal engage in a suspected drug transaction in the 500 block of 5th Ave. Southwest in downtown Rochester.
A uniformed police officer conducted a traffic stop for a malfunctioning brake light in the 2800 block of West River Pkwy. Northwest, the complaint says.
Deal was ordered out of the vehicle to accommodate a K-9 sniff of the vehicle that was initiated based upon the suspect drug sale activity. While speaking with Deal, the officer observed signs of impairment, the charges say.

Deal told the officer he used fentanyl the previous night and did crack cocaine about two hours before the traffic stop. A search of Deal’s clothing led to the discovery of 0.89 grams of suspected cocaine and 0.92 grams of suspected fentanyl, the complaint says.
Deal was brought to the Olmsted County Jail where he was strip searched. The search led to the discovery of a baggie containing a white powdery substance that tested positive for fentanyl. The complaint says that the package weighed 28.6 grams.
Law enforcement also obtained a warrant to take a urine sample from Deal that was sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for analysis.
Deal is charged with first-degree drug sales, first and fifth-degree drug possession and misdemeanor DWI.
Court records indicate Deal previously served a 98 month prison sentence for a second-degree drug possession conviction. He is due back in court next month.
