Heat Wave Prompts Air Quality Alert in Rochester, Most of Minnesota
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The first heatwave of the summer will be coupled with an Air Quality Alert for Rochester and most of Minnesota.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) issued the alert Monday afternoon. It takes effect at noon Tuesday and is scheduled to expire at 9:00 Thursday night.
The MPCA is predicting high ozone levels to smother the Rochester region. Officials say the combination of warm temperatures and low humidity will create favorable conditions to downgrade the air quality to the orange level, which means the air is unhealthy for individuals with respiratory conditions.
The highest ozone levels are expected to occur during the afternoon, when temperatures are the hottest. The alert stretches as far south as the Minnesota-Iowa border and as far north as the Brainerd Lakes area.
Highs in Rochester are expected to range from the high 80’s to lower 90’s while the Air Quality Alert is in effect. Members of groups sensitive to poor air are advised to limit outdoor exertion.
Officials are also asking Minnesotans to avoid pollution-contributing activities, such as burning and vehicle idling.
