The flu bug is beginning to hit Minnesota schools hard.

According to the latest weekly report from the state Health Department, there were 203 suspected outbreaks in schools around the state last week, up from just 19 the previous week.That was also the largest weekly spike in at least the past five influenza seasons.

There were 18 suspected outbreaks at long term care facilities, which is 14 more than the previous week.

The number of flu-related hospitalizations fell from 124 to 60.

The department also reported the 2nd  flu-related pediatric death of the current season. It’s not known if the victim was the Owatonna teenager who was being treated for flu-like symptoms when she died last Tuesday.
