The US Army Corps of Engineers is concerned about high water levels present on the Upper Mississippi River in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Officials say the current river flows are at levels normally observed in late spring and the agency is urging the public to remain vigilant because of an increased chance of localized flooding due to ice jams from Winona south to Guttenberg, Iowa. The Corps of Engineers says irregular temperatures have prevented ice from forming a stable way and that is compounding the ice dam problem this winter.

“We have never in our record had these sustained high flows over the month of January,” said Dan Fasching, St. Paul District water manager for the Upper Mississippi River.

Fasching says the problem could persist for weeks or even months depending on temperatures and rate of ice melt as spring approaches.
