Survey: Locals Name Minnesota’s 3 Most Infuriating Summer Parking Lots

There are a few universal truths about summer in Minnesota. We wait all year for it, we try to cram every possible outdoor activity into about three months, and apparently, we all lose a little bit of our patience in parking lots.

We've all been there: you finally made it to your favorite state park or lake beach, everyone's excited, and then... the parking lot Hunger Games begin. Someone's sitting in their car with their blinker on waiting for a spot, somebody else is driving the wrong way down the aisle, and a family is taking up multiple spots unloading approximately 47 beach toys and probably aren't leaving until Labor Day.

Top 3 Most Frustrating Summer Destination Parking Lots in Minnesota

A new survey set out to find the summer parking lots that drive people the craziest, and Minnesota definitely has a few that locals love to hate.

The survey was conducted in July 2026 by personal injury law firm Munley Law, which surveyed more than 3,000 drivers across the country about the summer destinations where parking causes the most frustration.

Drivers were asked to think about places like beaches, lakes, parks, and trailheads where they've experienced or witnessed overcrowded lots, drivers circling endlessly for spaces, blocked entrances, stolen parking spots, angry honking, door dings, reckless parking maneuvers, and even pedestrian close calls.

Here are Minnesota's top three.

#3. Park Point Recreation Area and Beach House Parking (Duluth)

Anybody who's spent a sunny summer day in Duluth is probably nodding along right now.

Park Point is one of the most popular summer destinations in northern Minnesota, and for good reason. It was recently recognized as one of the best beaches in the country. You've got the Lake Superior shoreline, picnic areas, playgrounds, volleyball courts, concessions, and plenty of space to spend the day.

Unfortunately, everybody else had the same idea.

The survey found that summer crowds can make parking here especially frustrating as visitors unload beach gear and fill up the lot throughout the day. By the time you finally grab a parking spot, you may feel like you've already completed the most stressful part of your beach day.

#2. Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center Parking (Itasca State Park)

There's something pretty magical about standing where the Mississippi River begins. Apparently, finding a place to park first can be a little less magical.

The Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center parking area at Itasca State Park sees a steady stream of visitors all summer long. Families come to walk across the headwaters, hike the trails, snap photos, and take part in summer programs throughout the park.

The challenge is that most people aren't just making a quick stop. Once they find a parking spot, they're settling in for a while. On busy summer weekends, that can mean full parking rows and a slow crawl through the lot before you ever get to dip your toes into one of Minnesota's most famous attractions.

#1. Lake Nokomis Main Beach Parking (Minneapolis)

If you've ever spent a beautiful summer afternoon at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis, this probably doesn't come as much of a surprise.

What should be a quick trip to the beach quickly turns into unloading coolers, towels, paddleboards, sunscreen, floaties, snacks, and whatever else somehow became essential for a two-hour beach day. Add cyclists, swimmers, kayakers, and picnickers all arriving at the same time, and finding a parking spot can be challenging.

The survey notes that drivers often find themselves making lap after lap through the parking lot while watching for someone who's maybe leaving. You know, the person slowly putting away their beach chair while casually chatting with their friends for another ten minutes.

Okay, that one didn't actually make the survey, but I'm willing to bet some of you were already thinking it.
