The sentence, handed down on Thursday in Olmsted County Court, abides by the punishment turn laid out in a plea agreement that was reached last month.
The Wabasha County man has a history of run-ins with law enforcement and had active arrest warrants at the time of last February's armed encounter with Rochester Police officers.
Kellogg Man Sentenced for Shooting During Fight With Police at Rochester Hotel
34-year-old David Collier was arrested at the Extended Stay America Hotel at the Hwy. 52/Hwy. 63 interchange in south Rochester after officers responded to the business on the report of people with guns on the property.
Police found Collier in a laundry room of the hotel and attempted to bring him into custody. The Kellogg man resisted the officers and a struggle ensued.
While fighting with police Collier pulled a gun out of his pocket and fired a round into the floor before officers gained control of him.
Last Month, Collier entered a plea deal in which he admitted to a first-degree assault charge involving the use of deadly force against a police officer.
Olmsted County prosecutors agreed to drop three other felony charges, including illegal possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of violence and attempted disarming of a peace officer in exchange for the guilty plea.
On Thursday Collier was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He has been given credit for serving 415 days behind bars prior to his conviction and sentence.
Collier was wanted on two active probation violation warrants at the time of his arrest. His criminal record includes felony convictions for burglary, fleeing police, drug offenses, and domestic assault.
