FARIBAULT – Emergency personnel responded to a report of a person down and unresponsive in a manhole in Faribault this morning around 7:30.

Firefighters initially tested and verified the presence of extremely high levels of both hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide and low levels of oxygen. Firefighters made initial entry and placed oxygen on the individual. Rescue operations to get the individual out of the confined space commenced. Once out, North Ambulance transported the patient to a nearby awaiting helicopter.

Faribault Fire Chief Dustin Dienst commented,

This is a tragic event and our hearts go out to the family and friends of the individual.

The Faribault Fire Department and Faribault Police Department conducted an investigation. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was contacted via the Minnesota Duty Officer.
