Judge Denies New Trial Request in Mayo Clinic-Dr. Joyner Lawsuit
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - An Olmsted County judge has denied a request for a new trial in a high-profile civil lawsuit involving Mayo Clinic and a prominent Mayo Clinic physician.
Judge Denies Request for New Trial
The legal team representing Dr. Michael Joyner filed the request for a new trial about a month after an Olmsted County jury rejected his claims that he was punished by his employer for comments he made in media interviews. Joyner argued that the disciplinary actions against him violated Mayo Clinic's "Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom Policy."

Whistleblower Claim Was Barred From Trial
According to court documents, Joyner also claimed that Mayo Clinic retaliated against him for his actions as a purported "whistleblower" by reporting a Mayo Clinic business partner's attempt to unlawfully access and use protected patient data. The judge presiding over the case barred Joyner from pursuing the whistleblower claim at trial.

Mayo Clinic Defended Its Disciplinary Actions
In response to the lawsuit, Mayo Clinic argued that Dr. Joyner was disciplined for problematic statements to the media and disrespectful communications with fellow Mayo Clinic employees.

The jury that heard the case determined that Mayo Clinic did not violate its policy and was not in breach of contract.
