She was one of two people accused of depriving the child of necessary food and healthcare in 2022.

The child died that year from the combined effects of starvation and an infection, according to federal court documents.

Red Lake Woman Sentenced for Depriving Child of Food & Healthcare

In April a federal jury convicted 64-year-old Sharon Rosebear of Red Lake of felony child neglect.

Federal court documents say Rosebear, who was tasked as the child’s caretaker, deprived the minor of food and healthcare despite having the means and ability to do so.

Healthcare is free for residents of the Red Lake Indian Reservation and Rosebear and her co-defendant, identified as Julius Fineday Sr., were receiving financial assistance to purchase food, according to evidence presented at the federal trial.

Court documents say the child died at the same weight she was three years ago and that she was isolated and never given medical attention for a severe lice infection, federal court documents say.

A news release issued by the Minnesota U.S. Attorney’s Office says Minnesota law indicates Rosebear was responsible for caring for the child despite not having legal custody.

Rosebear was sentenced to 15 months in prison on Tuesday. Fineday Sr. was sentenced to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the same charge earlier this year.
