Minnesota Graduation Rates Steady During First Part of Pandemic

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minnesota's high school graduation rate held steady last year despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minnesota Department of Education says the statewide four-year graduation rate for 2020 was 83.8 percent. That compares to 83.7 percent in 2019.

The overall four-year graduation rate in the Rochester School District was down 3-tenths of a percentage point from 2019 at 85.9 percent. Once again, the graduation rate for students attending the school district's three comprehensive high schools was over 90-percent, although the 90.4 percent rate this year was over a half percentage point below the 2019 rate.

Every subgroup of students in the Rochester Public Schools had graduation rates above the statewide average with the exception of special education students. Their graduation rate of just under 64 percent was a full percentage point below the statewide average. A news release from the school district says gains were seen in the graduation rates for Hispanic/Latino students, white students, students of two or more races, and English learners. The graduation rates among whites and Asian students were the highest at nearly 90 percent.
