Another Large Capture of Invasive Carp Near in Mississippi River
Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reporting another significant capture of invasive carp in southeastern Minnesota.
The DNR says commercial fishers working with the agency captured 82 silver carp and 1 bighead carp on February 13 and 14. The invasive species were caught in pool 5A on the Mississippi River near Winona.
A news release says the DNR and the US Fish and Wildlife Service are currently examining the captured carp to evaluate their age, reproductive condition, and information about their origin.
“As with previous captures, it is unlikely that these adult fish were the result of reproduction in Minnesota waters,” DNR Invasive Species Unit Supervisor Kelly Pennington said. “The DNR and partner agencies will continue to use a range of aggressive prevention and management techniques, consistent with the recently updated Invasive Carp Action Plan.”

This is the second largest capture of invasive carp in Minnesota. The largest occurred in December, when 296 silver carp, 23 grass carp and 4 bighead carp were captured in Pool 6 of the Mississippi River south of Winona near Trempealeau, Wisconsin.
