Mustang Was Airborne For Over 230 Feet in Rural Rochester Crash
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - It appears alcohol may have contributed to a high-speed crash on the southeast edge of Rochester on Saturday. Olmsted County Sheriff’s Captain Scott Behrns says charges are pending against a 22-year-old Rochester man who was driving a Mustang at over 100 miles-per-hour just before he was involved in a spectacular crash in the 3300 block of Marion Road Southeast.
Behrns says a deputy on patrol in the area clocked the vehicle traveling south at 102 mph approaching the traffic lights at 20th Street. The deputy also witnessed the driver, later identified as Timothy Kruse, swerving to avoid other vehicles at the intersection, but by the time the deputy turned around activated his emergency lights, the Mustang was already out of sight.
A few minutes later, the deputy came up the tangled wreckage of the sports car along Marion Road and found Kruse trapped inside. Investigators determined he lost control and left the roadway before traveling almost 150 feet in the ditch. Behrns says the car then hit a driveway approach and the vehicle vaulted over 230 feet through the air at a height of around 30 feet before it smashed into and severed a power pole.
While he was being extricated, Behrns says deputies spotted signs of alcohol consumption and were able to obtain a blood sample for testing after Kruse was rushed to St. Marys Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The deputies also found 5 grams of marijuana in the crashed car.
Information about Kruse’s medical condition is not being released.
