Nearly 50 Percent of Minnesota Now in Extreme Drought
Undated (KROC-AM News) - Drought conditions continued to worsen throughout most of Minnesota last week.
The updated US Drought Monitor Report from the National Weather Service shows extreme drought conditions now cover just under 50 percent of the state. A week ago, that number was about 42 percent.
Exceptional drought conditions, the worst rating in the report, grew from about 7 percent of the state to just over 8 percent. Those conditions were only found in northwestern Minnesota, while extreme drought conditions are spread across central and northern Minnesota, along with small areas of south-central and southwestern Minnesota.
Winona, along with portions of Houston and Wabasha Counties remain the only areas of Minnesota not experiencing a drought. The majority of Olmsted, Fillmore, and Goodhue Counties are still rated as abnormally dry, while most of the rest of the southeastern corner of the state is seeing moderate drought conditions.
