Owatonna Man Charged in Southern MN Shooting That Injured Four People During July 4th Weekend
Fairmont, MN (KROC-AM News)- Authorities in Southern Minnesota have arrested an Owatonna man in connection to a July 3 shooting that sent four attendees of a large gathering to the hospital.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the shooting around 11:45 p.m. at a large gathering in rural Truman, which is about 45 miles southwest of Mankato. The four people shot at the gathering were taken to a Fairmont Hospital and have since been released.
An updated news release issued by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday says hundreds of people from area across Minnesota and Iowa were at the gathering and that altercation had occurred before the gunfire rang out. Authorities in Steele County arrested 18-year-old Lavant Marques Shaw as a result of the investigation.
The criminal complaint, filed in Martin County Court Wednesday, says attendees at the gathering reported seeing Shaw handing a gun to another man shortly before the shooting started. One witness said Shaw apologized for shooting someone while the two were exchanging messages. Officers found four shell casings at the scene.
Shaw was charged Thursday with four counts of aiding and abetting attempted second-degree murder, four counts of felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and a felony count of furnishing a dangerous weapon. The judge in the case set his conditional bail at $300,000.
The charges indicate at least one other suspect is possibly involved in the shooting. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office says investigators have served search warrants and collected evidence. They’re asking anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.
