Rochester Man Charged in Hammer Attack at Cub No-Shows Court Appearance
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- Authorities issued an arrest warrant for a Rochester man charged with felony assault after he failed to show up at his Olmsted County Court appearance this week.
The charges stem from an incident at the Rochester Cub Foods earlier this month. Rochester Police responded to the grocery store on the report of a man swinging a hammer at shoppers and found the suspect being restrained by a shopper in the deli area when they arrived.
The man holding down the alleged attacker told police that he took 28-year-old Pedro Vasquez to the ground after he swung the hammer at him and missed. While on the ground, the man says Vasquez head-butted him and that he hit Vasquez after the headbutt, the criminal complaint says.
A police spokesman said witnesses' descriptions of Vasquez’s behavior before the alleged hammer attack indicated he may have been under the influence of drugs.
Vasquez was then arrested and charged with one count of second-degree assault and a misdemeanor count of fifth-degree assault. He was released without bail but with conditions following his initial court appearance in the case on July 7.
The arrest warrant, issued on Thursday, describes Vasquez as 5’ 7”, 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office typically asks anyone who comes across an individual with an active arrest to call law enforcement and not attempt to apprehend the wanted subject.
