Rochester Man Reaches Plea Deal In Riverwood Lane Shooting

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Olmsted County Attorney's Office has worked out a plea agreement with a Rochester man accused of a shooting in the city last May.

46-year-old Corey Schreiber was arrested several months after the incident in the 2800 block of Riverwood Lane Northwest. Court documents indicate Rochester police were on patrol in the area when they heard gunshots and spotted two males running out of the neighborhood.

The criminal complaint says multiple officers then converged on the area and located the victim, who stated he had gone to a residence to assist a woman with moving out. He told the officers he got into an argument with the homeowner and heard someone else say, "should I shoot this guy?" The man stated he began running out of the house when he heard several gunshots and a person inside the home replying "yes."

The charging documents say investigators found two bullet holes in a screened patio door at the residence. The investigators stated that it appeared the bullets were fired from inside the house and struck an umbrella attached to some patio furniture and grazed the top of the wooden deck.

According to the criminal complaint, police also found obvious evidence of drug use throughout the house, including the white powder that tested positive for cocaine, along with a pile of small white pills and multiple syringes. When the homeowner was later interviewed after he was charged with "serious controlled substances-related offenses," he told investigators that Schreiber was the person with a gun and fired it as the victim was running out the back door.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Schreiber entered a guilty plea Tuesday to a charge of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss a charge of illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Schreiber is scheduled to be sentenced in June. The conviction carries a minimum sentence of three years in prison, but Schreiber will be allowed to argue for a downward departure after he participates in a presentence investigation.
