Charges: Violent Rochester Assault Put Victim in Hospital, Suspect Charged

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A Rochester man accused of carrying out an violent assault that put the victim in the hospital is facing a felony charge. 

The alleged assault occurred on Sunday evening. Rochester Police found and arrested the suspect during a traffic stop on Monday. 

Officers responded to the report of an assault shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday. The complaint says the victim, described as an adult male, reported 29-year-old Irwin Arnold Herrera approached him, punched him in the right temple then threw him to the ground.

His head hit the concrete, which caused the victim to lose consciousness for about a minute. The man told police he came to and felt Herrera punching him 20-25 times, the court document says. 

A woman who arrived at the scene reported seeing Herrera punching the victim in the face then fleeing the scene on a bike. The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment of broken orbital bones, broken jaw bones, and a possible concussion, according to the complaint. 

Police found Herrera the day after the alleged assault and took him into custody during a traffic stop conducted shortly after 5:15 p.m. Herrera, who the court document says had swollen hands and scrapes on his knuckles, was taken into custody without incident. 

The complaint does not list the location of the alleged assault. The area where Herrera was arrested was also not disclosed. 

He’s facing a felony third-degree assault charge. Olmsted County Court records indicate Herrera posted his $10,000 conditional bail on Wednesday. 

Herrera is due back in court later this month.
