The Rochester entrant in this year’s National Geographic Bee did not make it out of today’s preliminary round of competition.

According to the Bee’s website, Lucas Eggers is an 11-year-old 6th grader, representing Hennepin County Homeschoolers. He earned the top score in the National History Bee for Minnesota.

Ten of this year’s fifty four 5th - 8th grade contestants advanced to the final round, which will be held Wednesday.

The student who is crowned National Geographic Bee champion wins the top prize of a $50,000 college scholarship, lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and an all-expenses-paid expedition for two to the Galápagos islands aboard the Lindblad ship National Geographic Endeavour.

The second-place finisher receives a $25,000 college scholarship, and the student who places third receives a college scholarship of $10,000.
