Rochester Family of Five Needs Help After Losing Their Home in a Fire Days Before Christmas
There are some stories that hit a little harder than others. This is one of them.
Less than two weeks before Christmas, a young Rochester family of five lost everything they own in a devastating house fire.

The fire broke out Friday evening (December 12) at the Homestead Village Townhomes in SE Rochester just minutes after the family had stepped out for a quick gas station run. When they came back, the house and almost everything inside it had already been destroyed.
I don’t share this lightly because my family and I have lived this exact nightmare.
I know the feeling of standing there, watching flames consume the place you thought was safe. The helplessness. The disbelief. The way time seems to slow down while everything you own disappears in front of you. There’s no preparing for that moment.
And then comes the part people don’t always see.
The crushing anxiety that sets in afterward. Figuring out where you’ll sleep. What you’ll wear tomorrow. How you replace basic necessities when life has been flipped upside down in a matter of minutes. It’s scary. No, it’s terrifying.
This Rochester family is navigating all of that right now, while also caring for three young children.
The parents, Emma Dolton and Nate Dickinson, are raising a 5-year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl, and an 8-week-old newborn baby girl. Emma is just two months postpartum. What should have been a time focused on a new baby and the holidays has instead become a moment of grief they’re helping their children navigate.
"They’re exhausted. They’re heartbroken. And they’re doing everything they can to provide stability for their kids." Jasmine Thompson shared on the GoFundMe page she set up for the family
Thankfully, everyone made it out alive and unharmed. And that matters more than anything.
Emma shared a brief but powerful post this week about what comes after the flames are out. “This is the part of a house fire nobody talks about,” she wrote.
Emma described the “before” as ordinary and safe, and the “after” as ash. While she said she’s endlessly grateful everyone survived, she also acknowledged the grief that remains.
“Gratitude does not erase grief,” she wrote.
But because of the fire, they truly lost everything. Clothing. Baby items. Furniture. The everyday things that make a house feel like home. They’ve been thankful for the outpouring of support so far, but moving forward isn’t possible without finding a home again.

Right now, the priority is to help with a deposit and find a safe place to live, so their children can have their own beds again and the family can start to feel settled.
That’s where community matters so much.
How the Rochester Community Can Help After the Fire
When my family went through a house fire, it was the kindness of others that carried us through the days that felt impossible. The financial help that eased an overwhelming, unexpected burden. The support that made it possible to take that first step forward. Those things didn’t just help practically. They helped us breathe again.
A GoFundMe has been created to help this Rochester family take that same first critical step, securing housing so they can begin rebuilding their life.
If you’re able to help, even a small donation can make a real difference. And if giving isn’t possible right now, sharing their story or keeping them in your thoughts still matters more than you might realize.

No one ever expects to need help like this. But when it happens, having your community show up means everything.
