Rutgers dismisses Nelson from football team
MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — Rutgers says it has dismissed quarterback Philip Nelson from its football program
in the wake of assault charges filed in Minnesota. Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood made the announcement Tuesday.
Nelson is a former quarterback for Minnesota. He played in 11 games last season, but announced afterward that he would transfer to Rutgers.
He was charged Monday with two counts of felony assault in connection with a weekend fight that left another man severely injured. Authorities say Nelson kicked 24-year-old Isaac Dallas Kolstad in the head after another man punched Kolstad and he fell to the ground. Kolstad's family says he remains in critical condition.
Nelson's attorney says his client was not the aggressor. Nelson was released from custody yesterday after posting $20,000 bail.
