An event scheduled for later this month will honor two Rochester residents who were instrumental in making the landmark a reality and serve as a kickoff for a fundraising effort to expand it.

Rochester business man and community leader Wayne Stillman passed away at the age of 86 earlier this year.

He helped to lead efforts to raise funds for the construction and future maintenance of the Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial in Rochester, which was dedicated in 2000 and quickly became one of the community's most cherished landmarks.

Stillman was honored for his contributions over the summer, when the City of Rochester changed the street name where the memorial is located to Wayne Stillman Parkway Southwest.
