St. Paul Police-Officer Involved Shooting Involved Murder Suspect

St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - St. Paul police say the man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon was a homicide suspect.

At a news conference Saturday night, St. Paul police released additional information concerning the deadly incident in a mainly residential area located several miles northeast of Fort Snelling.

Officials say officers responded to the area around 1 PM after receiving a report that 36-year-old Mychel Stowers had been spotted at a laundromat. The anonymous tipster indicated he was on a bicycle.

St. Paul police say the responding officers later spotted a man on a bicycle and followed him as he left the laundromat before approaching to confirm that it was Stowers. At that point, officials say the man on the bike produced a handgun and the officers opened fire.

St. Paul police reported that lifesaving measures were attempted at the scene and the man was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

Officials indicated that Stowers was the subject of an arrest warrant connected to the murder of Damara Stowers on October 19. The police reports concerning homicide indicated the victim was his ex-wife and was pregnant when she was killed.

Stowers had also been charged in connection with a shooting that occurred during a carjacking near the site of the murder. In that case, the victim was shot in the leg.

Court records show Stowers was previously convicted of murder in 2008.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is in charge of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The BCA has yet to confirm if the man shot by the St. Paul officers was Stowers.
