Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - It will soon be a different view for passing motorists and residents of a Rochester neighborhood near Saint Marys Hospital.

On Wednesday, construction crews began tearing down the buildings that make up the southern half of the Miracle Mile Shopping Center.

A $36 million project that includes an apartment building, grocery store and retail space will be constructed there. It’s scheduled to be completed by the end of September next year. The northern half of the shopping center is still in operation.

The shopping center opened in 1956. It was a history-making opening as it became the first shopping center in the state to be located outside the Twin Cities. It once housed two Minnesota businesses that are no more; a Red Owl grocery store and a Snyder’s Drug outlet.
