Owamni - Indigenous Restaurant in Minneapolis, MN

In case you aren't already familiar with Owamni, it's a restaurant that serves only Indigenous foods made with Indigenous ingredients (when possible). Their website explains it best:

Experience the true flavors of North America, featuring foods of Mni Sota Makoce, Land Where the Waters Reflect the Clouds.

We prioritize purchasing from Indigenous food producers locally and nationally. We have removed colonial ingredients such as wheat flour, cane sugar and dairy. We are proud to present a decolonized dining experience.

My husband and I went to Owamni for my birthday a couple of years ago. It was so delicious and also like nothing we've ever had before. We loved it!

Owamni, and owner and chef Sean Sherman, have won many awards since they opened in the summer of 2021.

But now, they've decided to make a move, and people are really excited about it.

Owamni Moving to the Guthrie Theater Restaurant Location

Right now, Owamni is located in Minneapolis along the Mississippi River. There are great views of the river from the dining area, so it's sad to see them leave that location.

However, they're moving to a pretty cool spot: in the Guthrie Theater!

The Guthrie is just a few blocks down the street from Owamni's current location, so they aren't making a far move. Owamni will be setting up in a restaurant space in the Guthrie's building.

Sean wrote about the exciting news on Facebook this morning, saying:

The Guthrie’s restaurant space offers double the capacity, a larger kitchen, and the ability to host more events and nonprofit programming, which means we can welcome more guests, expand our offerings, and move even more intentional food dollars to Indigenous producers.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with that space. I'm also selfishly excited that it's going to be double the capacity. They're so popular that it's hard to get a spot at the restaurant sometimes!

Owamni will officially move into the Guthrie in the spring of 2026.
