Campers Destroyed By Fire at Zumbrota Area Campground
Zumbrota, MN (KROC-AM News) - It's suspected that a discarded cigarette may have started a fire that wiped out several campers at a southeastern Minnesota campground Wednesday afternoon.
The Zumbrota Fire Department responded to Shades of Sherwood Campground just north of Zumbrota around 4:15 PM. Goodhue County Sheriff's deputies, Zumbrota police officers, and Zumbrota Area Ambulance also responded to the report of leaves on fire and encroaching on a camper.
A news release says Zumbrota police indicated the fire was rapidly spreading and requested additional assistance from the Wanamingo Fire Department to supply water to battle the blaze. Around the same time, a 911 caller reported that a camper was on fire.
When Zumbrota police arrived at the scene, they found several campers fully involved in the fire. The officers then checked to make sure there were no people inside the campers.
Zumbrota firefighters arrived after the police officers and began extinguishing the flames. It was reported the fire was brought under control shortly after 5 PM.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
