(UPDATE) Driver Extricated After Car-Train Crash in St. Charles
St. Charles, MN (KROC-AM News) - The St. Charles Police and Fire Departments responded this morning to a car-train collision.
Few details are available, but St. Charles police reported the crash occurred around 10 AM and forced the closure of all but one of the rail crossings in the Winona County city for approximately two hours.
Photos of the crash scene provided by the St. Charles Police Department show a passenger vehicle that was hit by a Canadian Pacific Railway locomotive on the driver's side in a collision that pushed the car approximately 500 feet down the tracks. The photo suggests that the collision occurred at the West 11th Street crossing, which is 2 blocks west of Highway 74.
At this point, officials have not released any information concerning the occupants of the car, but a witness reported the driver was transported from the scene in an ambulance after he was extricated from the wreckage. The witness also indicated the Mayo One helicopter responded to the crash, but did not transport the patient.
An investigator from the railroad joined local authorities at the scene about an hour after the crash occurred.
