Charges Filed in Decades Old Minnesota Murder Case

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Prosecutors say they used new DNA tests to break a 30-year-old cold-case killing in St. Paul.

The Ramsey County Attorney's Office on Thursday charged 58-year-old Michael Anthony Withers with two counts of second-degree murder in the Feb. 1, 1987, death of 81-year-old Lillian Kuller.

Kuller was found dead in her ransacked apartment in St. Paul's Macalester Groveland neighborhood. Investigators were unable to identify a suspect at that time.

Minnesota Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/2nwDzDA ) reports the break came this week when DNA tests results from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension came back showing the Y-chromosome found beneath Kuller's fingernails matched Withers.

Withers is currently serving a prison sentence for burglary. He is due in court March 24. Online court records do not list an attorney who could comment for him.
