Rochester Police Investigating Costly Theft & Attempted Break-in

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- Rochester Police are investigating a costly construction site theft and an attempted break-in.

A spokesperson said both incidents occurred in southeast Rochester. Officers responded to the reports at two separate locations on Monday. 

The construction theft was reported at a worksite near Seneca Foods in the 500 block of 20th St. Southeast. The complainant told officers someone had stolen approximately 340 feet of copper fiber optic lining estimated to be worth $25,000. 

The theft is believed to have occurred between 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23 and 9 a.m. on Monday.

The attempted burglary was reported at a residence in the 200 block of 10 ½ St. Southeast. The complainant in that case reported damage to the home’s front door that's believed to have occurred between 7:45 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. on Monday. The resident believed the damage was consistent with an attempted break-in, police say. 

Police say it does appear anyone gained access to the residence and that the victim did not report anything stolen as of Tuesday morning morning. A damage estimate to the home’s front door is not available. 

It’s unclear if the construction site theft and attempted burglary are related. So far no arrests have been reported in either case.

Correction: A previous version of this story said nothing had been reported stolen from the 10 1/2 St. SE residence as of Wednesday morning.
