Minneapolis (KROC AM News) - Looting and property damage in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday night was apparently triggered by rumors of a police-related fatal shooting of a Black man.

In response, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey declared a state of emergency and ordered a citywide curfew through 6;00 AM Thursday. He also requested assistance from Gov. Tim Walz, who agreed to send 150 state troopers to assist Minneapolis police in restoring order and authorized the deployment of National Guard troops.

This is the city's Facebook message:
“This curfew is to mitigate against risks of further damage to life and property, to reduce disruption to essential public services, to assure continued government operations, to protect health and safety of the community, and to organize and direct an orderly restoration of peace.
Law enforcement, fire, medical personnel, members of the media, and other personnel authorized by the City are exempt from the curfew. Those traveling directly to and from work, and that are seeking care, fleeing dangerous circumstances, or experiencing homelessness are exempt.”

The city also took the unusual step of releasing a surveillance video of the man who shot himself.

“This evening, a murder suspect committed suicide as police approached them at 8th and Nicollet downtown. No officer weapons were fired. This is a tragedy for our community that is still hurting. Our condolences go to the families of the victims.”

Both the mayor and governor held late-night news conferences to address the situation.

Walz also had this message on Twitter:

Minneapolis, it’s time to heal. We must rebuild and recover. Dangerous, unlawful behavior will not be tolerated. The State Patrol is headed to Minneapolis to help restore order. I remain in close contact with the city and every state resource stands ready to help bring peace.
