Dodge Center Teen Sentenced for Death of Friend
Mantorville, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Dodge Center teenager was sentenced Wednesday for a conviction stemming from a fatal traffic crash two years ago.
Candace Utech was 17- years-old when she drove a car at a high rate of speed on a stretch of road in rural Dodge County known as “Whoopee Hill,” resulting in a rollover crash that claimed the life of her friend. 18-year-old Logan Maas was one of three passengers in Utech’s car and was fatally injured when he was ejected from the vehicle.
Utech was originally charged with criminal vehicular homicide but was allowed to enter a guilty plea to a gross misdemeanor count of reckless driving. Judge Jodi Williamson abided by the terms of the plea agreement today when she sentenced Utech to probation until her 21st birthday. The young woman will also be required to perform 100 hours of community work service, a requirement she plans to fulfill my talking to high school students about the tragic consequences of her actions.
