Rochester Police Find Hundreds of Grams of Meth During Traffic Stop That Followed Suspected Drug Deal
39-year-old Michael Martin Cozik is charged with one count each of first-degree drug sales and first-degree drug possession. He is also facing gross misdemeanor charges for violating driving restrictions.
A Rochester police officer on patrol on Marion Rd. SE saw Cozik pull into a gas station and exit the vehicle he was driving.
The officer then saw a suspected drug transaction between Cozik and an individual who was at the gas station but did not enter the store, the charges allege. Cozik has a revoked license and is not allowed to drive a vehicle that does not have ignition interlock, the court document says.
Cozik then left the store and officers followed him until initiating a traffic stop near the southeast Rochester Post Office. Police arrested Cozik for the ignition interlock violation and searched him as part of the arrest.
During the search, officers found a methamphetamine pipe on Cozik, the complaint says. Officers then called a K9 to the scene to conduct a sniff and the K9 alerted police to the presence of narcotics.
A backpack found inside of the vehicle contained two large baggies of suspected meth, three smaller baggies of suspected meth, a black scale, coffee strainers, plastic bags, a secondary cell phone, and a second burned meth pipe, the charges say.
The combined amount of meth found during the search weighed 439.4 grams, the complaint says.
Court records indicate Cozik was given a five-year stayed prison sentence for a first-degree drug possession conviction in February of 2022.
Cozik made his first court appearance in the new case on Monday. He is being held on $500,000 bail without conditions and is due back in court later this month.
