Election Shakeup: Rochester City Councilman Announces Bid for Council President
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A current member of the Rochester City Council is throwing his hat in the ring for this fall’s race for one of the city’s most powerful elected positions.

City Council Member Shaun Palmer announced his campaign in a letter published on Thursday. He has represented the fifth ward on Rochester’s City Council since 2018.
Palmer’s letter says he’s seeking the position of President of the Rochester City Council. Palmer’s letter says he made the decision to run for the post after “much consideration and discussion with members of our community.”
The Rochester native says he believes the city can address its current challenges and take advantage of future growth opportunities under his leadership.
Palmer says he’s committed to keeping the City Council President position non-partisan.
Palmer has picked up endorsements from former Rochester City Council Presidents Randy Staver and John Hunziker. Former Mayors Dewey Day and Ardelle Brede have also endorsed the council member, the campaign announcement letter says.
Brooke Carlson is the current President of the Rochester City Council. Carlson, who was elected to the office in 2020, has not yet announced her plans for the upcoming election.

Palmer writes that he's looking forward to engaging in meaningful discussions with the community. The 2024 election is scheduled for Nov. 5.
