Fatal Medical Event Causes Traffic Jam & Crash Near Rochester
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - One person was transported by ambulance to St. Marys Hospital this afternoon following a rear-end crash near the Rochester Airport that occurred during a traffic jam that formed following a fatal incident on Highway 63.
The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office says traffic on northbound Highway 63 became snarled after a deputy came upon a vehicle parked on the shoulder of the roadway with its emergency flashers activated around 2 PM. The deputy went to investigate and found a man who had apparently suffered a medical emergency slumped over in the driver’s seat.
Efforts to revive the man were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s name has not been released and the cause of his death has not been determined.
The State Patrol says the injury crash connected to the resulting traffic jam involved a semi-truck and an SUV and occurred just north of the I-90 interchange. The crash report indicates the driver of the SUV, a 41-year-old woman from Lime Springs, Iowa, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
