A section of 1st Avenue Southwest in downtown Rochester will close to through traffic beginning Monday for a major Destination Medical Center project.

Rochester Public Works says barricades will go up on Center Street and 2nd Street Southwest to make room for the first phase of the Heart of the City DMC initiative. Vehicle access to the Marriott Hotel and pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses in the construction zone during the duration of the project.

The first phase will focus on redeveloping the east portion of the Peace Plaza, 1st Avenue, and the adjacent alleys. The amenities will include herbalists streets, movable seating options, interactive art displays, water features, and more trees.

Rochester Public Works will also be replacing and realigning the sanitary sewer in the same area to provide additional capacity for future development. Later this month, additional traffic barriers will be installed on 2nd Street Southwest between Broadway and 1st Avenue for that project.
