FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — An Iraq War veteran who authorities say killed three people and wounded 16 others at Fort Hood was being treated for mental illness.

A senior officer says the shooter had been getting help for depression and anxiety before he opened fire on fellow soldiers yesterday and eventually killed himself.

Investigators say they'll search his home and computers and interview his widow. They also want to talk to witnesses about whether there was a fight or argument on the base before the attack.

Within hours of the attack, investigators started looking into whether his combat experience caused post-traumatic stress.

A spokesman for Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple says three of the shooting victims are in critical condition and six are serious. Deke Jones says eight males and one female were admitted following yesterday's gunfire.

Fort Hood officials did not immediately provide details on the other seven people who were shot or otherwise hurt during the rampage.

Fort Hood is the same post where Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan opened fire on soldiers in 2009, killing 13 and wounding more than 30 others before he was shot.
