Rochester Man Arrested for June 17 Shooting at Gates of Rochester Apartment Complex
Rochester police responded to reports of gunfire at the Gates of Rochester Apartment complex in the 2000 block of 41st St. Northwest on the afternoon of June 17.
Preliminary information issued by police at the time indicated responding officers found a spent shell casing at the scene.
The criminal complaint says officers began reviewing security camera footage of the shooting scene and saw an individual enter a vehicle that pulled into the parking lot.
He exited the vehicle several minutes later and was then seen reaching back into the vehicle. The vehicle then began to speed away and the man who had gotten out was dragged, the charges say.
While the man was being dragged an object, later determined to be a firearm, fell out of his waistband. He ran to pick-up the gun then fired shots at the vehicle, the complaint says.
Investigators identified the suspected shooter as 22-year-old Katavion Lama Leggins. During an interview with investigators, Leggins admitted to being the man seen shooting the gun, the complaint says.
He told police he entered the vehicle for a drug deal. Leggins said he exited after one of the occupants brandished a handgun, according to the court document.
The Rochester man admitted to firing multiple rounds at the vehicle as it sped away, the complaint says. No injuries were reported.
Leggins is charged with felony counts of second-degree assault, reckless discharge of a firearm within a municipality and gross misdemeanor possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
The complaint says Leggins was on probation for a third-degree burglary conviction at the time of the shooting.
Leggins made his first court appearance Wednesday morning. He is being held on $10,000 conditional bail and is due back in court next month.
