Minneapolis, MN (KROC AM News) - A team of Rochester Public School girls claimed top prize at the fifth annual Technovation meet in Minneapolis over the weekend. They created a cell phone app that provides resources for immigrants to improve their quality of life in a foreign community.

The team, called B.A.S.I.C. B.A.L.S.A, is compiled of three middle schoolers and two high schoolers from RPS. They won the competition that was held at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.

Their team was one of the three high school teams to qualify at the State Meet for the next round of the international Technovation Challenge in San Francisco. Last year, a different RPS high school team was runner-up globally and was awarded $5,000 in scholarship money.

Beside moving on the next Technovation round, the team will also compete in the semifinals of the 14th annual Minnesota Cup, which is the largest statewide startup competition in the country.

In all, 78 teams in Minnesota comprised of 312 girls compete at the Appapalooza this past weekend.
