Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester firefighters called out Sunday to deal with a blaze at a southside motel found it was nearly out when they arrived, thanks to a quick-thinking guest.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Kerska says the guest who was in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel near the county fairgrounds spotted the fire on a third floor deck around 6 p.m. The guest told the manager to call 911 and then grabbed a fire extinguisher and began battling the blaze.The guest was still trying to get the blaze out when firefighters arrived and finished the job.

The preliminary damage estimate was $2500.

The cause is under investigation.
