Iowa Wants to Bring Back the Death Penalty for a Very Specific Reason

The Death Penalty was abolished in Iowa back in 1965, but a new bill in the Iowa Senate could reverse the ruling under exceptional circumstances.

Is Iowa Bringing Back the Death Penalty?

Iowa Senate Study Bill 3085 was introduced to the chamber earlier this month and is stated as follows:

A bill for an act creating a capital murder offense by establishing the penalty of death for murder in the first degree, and including effective date and applicability provisions.

But it's not for all capital murder offenses. This bill is targeted at individuals who murder law enforcement intentionally.

According to Iowa Capital Dispatch, the bill advanced in the senate on Monday and could bring back the Death Penalty in certain unique situations:

The legislation advanced Monday would allow for the death penalty to be imposed in cases where a person is convicted of first-degree murder and of intentionally killing of a peace officer, or correctional officer, hostage or other public employee while in a correctional facility.
