Preston, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Kasson woman has been ordered to pay more than $20,000 in restitution for a hit-and-run involving an Amish buggy earlier this year.

34-year-old Brittany Nicole Edgar was charged with driving a car that crashed into the back of the buggy on a rural road in Fillmore County on the night of February 16. She was accused of leaving the scene after the collision sent the buggy into the ditch, resulting in injuries to the seven children and their parents writing in the horse-drawn vehicle.

Court documents stated that several of the children suffered serious injuries. A 12-year-old girl was treated for a fractured skull, a three-year-old boy had a broken arm, and a one-year-old had facial fractures and other injuries. The two adults and the other children ended up with mainly scrapes and bruises.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators obtained a search warrant to examine the data on the former Spring Valley woman's cell phone and uncovered evidence that she was exchanging text messages around the time of the crash. The evidence also included a Facebook message that was sent by Edgar indicating she had just been involved in a car accident.

Edgar was charged with a felony count of criminal vehicular operation, a gross misdemeanor count of the same charge, and four misdemeanor charges for leaving the scene of an accident, careless driving, giving false information to an officer, and failure to provide proof of insurance.

A plea agreement was reached in the case last month, and Edgar entered a guilty plea to the felony charge of criminal vehicular operation for leaving the scene of a crash involving substantial bodily harm. All of the other charges were dismissed.

In Fillmore County Court this afternoon, Edgar was sentenced to 30 days in jail with work-release privileges if she is deemed eligible. She was also placed on supervised probation for three years and directed by the court to pay $20,600 in restitution.
