Major Demolition Work Begins This Month For $5B Mayo Expansion
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Mayo Clinic provided an update of the near-term construction schedule for the $5 billion Bold. Forward. Unbound expansion project.
Mayo officials say demolition work on the exterior of the Ozmun complex along 2nd Street Southwest a block west of the Mayo Building is scheduled to begin this month. Exterior demolition on the old Lourdes High School building is currently slated to get underway in March.

Construction of a new Mayo Clinic South Parking Ramp in downtown Rochester is expected to begin after a groundbreaking in the middle of the year and Mayo is planning to begin building a new staff parking ramp at St. Marys Hospital this spring. Work on building a large staff parking ramp at the planned West Transit Village near Cascade Lake along 2nd Street Southwest is also scheduled to start this spring as part of the city's LINK Rapid Bus Transit system, which is slated to become operational sometime next year.
At a news conference this morning, Mayo Clinic officials also indicated that the Gonda and Mayo East Entrance remodeling projects will get underway this spring to allow for the future closure of the current main entrance to the downtown Mayo complex on the west side of the Gonda Building. The closure is needed to prepare for the largest project planned as part of the Bold. Forward. Unbound initiative, which calls for a huge patient care facility on the site of the current Damon Parking Ramp and the Ozmun complex.
Meanwhile, expansion of Mayo Clinic's Prospect Utility Plant will continue throughout this year while work on upgrades to the pedestrian subway system and the utility infrastructure in downtown Rochester is ongoing. That work has already resulted in significant road closures throughout the downtown area that consists of the current and future Mayo Clinic campus.
Mayo Clinic also announced a $500,000 donation to the Rochester Downtown Alliance to help mitigate the disruptions related to the massive construction project. The funding will be used for signage, marketing, and programming to support downtown businesses.
