Man Convicted in Southern Minnesota Kidnapping Case Avoids Prison
Cannon Falls, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Minneapolis man accused of abducting a woman and leading Cannon Falls police on a wild high-speed chase two years ago has avoided a prison sentence.
27-year-old Daquairius Black allegedly drove away and held captive in his vehicle a woman who told investigators that she mistook his vehicle for a rideshare service in downtown Minneapolis and got into it on the night of August 27, 2022. The victim indicated that she and her boyfriend were in Minneapolis to attend a concert when they got into a fight and she walked away from him and became lost before getting into Black's vehicle.
The criminal complaint alleges Black drove the woman around the Twin Cities before heading south on Highway 52. She stated that Black repeatedly instructed her to perform sexual acts on him before he finally stopped at the convenience store in Cannon Falls after she complained that she needed to use the restroom.
The charging document says the woman was able to alert the staff at the business that she needed help and Cannon Falls police officers were dispatched. When they arrived, Black sped away and crashed his vehicle into a squad car driven by Cannon Falls Police Chief Jeff McCormick.
According to the court document, the collision sent both vehicles into the front yard of a residence, and Black allegedly nearly struck a woman when he drove his vehicle back under the roadway and continued to flee. Eventually the pursuit made its way to northbound Highway 52, where the police chief discontinued the chase after Black's vehicle hit speeds exceeding 120 mph.
Black was later arrested in Faribault and charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, fleeing police, and illegal possession of a firearm. His bail was set at $1 million.
Black earlier worked out a plea deal with Goodhue County Prosecutors and admitted to the kidnapping charge and another felony count of fleeing police in exchange for the dismissal of the other charges. He was sentenced this morning to three years on probation and was ordered to pay $5000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 717 says in jail, which was erased by the credit for the 717 days he has been in jail since his arrest.
