Man Arrested in Rochester Officer-Involved Shooting Identified
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the man who was arrested in an officer-involved shooting incident early Wednesday in Rochester.
The BCA says 26-year-old Dawante Atkins (aka Dewante Atkins) of Rochester is currently in the Olmsted County Jail where he is being held for a probation violation.
Charges related to the incident will be decided after the investigation is completed. Because a gun was fired by an officer, the BCA is conducting the investigation. The agency said late Wednesday it will release additional information, including the names of the officers involved, once the initial round of interviews is completed.
Atkins is accused of striking an officer with his car in the parking lot of a NW apartment complex. He also reportedly rammed two squad cars and that is when at least one officer fired a gun. After Atkins stopped in a nearby field, a taser was used to subdue him.
The officer he hit was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Court records indicate Atkins has been convicted of driving with a revoked license 21 times since 2016, including 9 times since February 2019.
